यह मेरा दूसरा ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास है। आठवीं शताब्दी के संधिकाल के अंतस्सत्त्व को ‘सार्थ’ में, उपन्यास के रूप में, आविष्कृत करने का और अब ‘सार्थ’ के समय के बाद के सत्य को ‘आवरण’ द्धउपन्यासऋ में चित्रित करने का मैंने प्रयास किया है। भारत के इतिहास के अत्यंत संकीर्ण इस अवधि के बारे में विपुल प्रमाण में सामग्री उपलब्ध होती है, लेकिन आवरण की शक्ति इस विपुलता के ऊपर विजृंभित हो रही है। ‘सार्थ’ की अवधि का इतिहास ज्यादातर आवरण-शक्ति के लिए आहुति बन नहीं पाया है। उनके बारे में निर्भीक रूप से सत्य को अंकित किया जा सकता है। लेकिन ‘आवरण’ की अवधि के इतिहास के बारे में यही बात नहीं कही जा सकती है। प्रत्येक सोपान में आवरण की शक्ति को बेधते हुए आगे बढ़ने की अपरिहार्यता सामने आती है। इसीलिए इस उपन्यास के स्वरूप और तंत्रें को उसके अनुकूल समायोजित कर लेना पड़ा। इस उपन्यास की ऐतिहासिकता के विषय में मेरा अपना कुछ भी नहीं है। प्रत्येक अंश या पग के लिए जो ऐतिहासिक आधार हैं उनको साहित्य की कलात्मकता जहाँ तक सँभाल पाती है वहाँ तक मैंने उपन्यास के अंदर ही शामिल कर लिया है। उपन्यास के तंत्र के विन्यास में यह अंश किस प्रकार प्रधान रूप में कार्यान्वित हुआ है, इसको सर्जनशील लेखक और दर्शनशील पाठक, दोनों पहचान सकते हैं। शेष आधारों को उपन्यास के अंदर के उपन्यास को रच डालने वाले चरित्र ने ही, अपनी क्रिया की आवश्यकता के रूप में, प्रस्तुत कर दिया है, न कि मैंने। इस पूरी वस्तु को जो अद्यतन रूप प्रदान किया है, उसमें ही मेरी मौलिकता है। इतिहास की सच्चाई में कला का भाव यदि चुआ है, तो वहाँ तक साहित्य के रूप में यह सफ़ल हुआ है, ऐसा मैं मानता हूँ। -भैरप्पा
